Dressing Style: Hera isn't one to flaunt her body and prefers to dress modestly. Corals, yellows, and teals are among some of her typical colors, but the occasional maroons, purples, pink, and neutrals also make frequent appearances in her wardrobe.
In general, the word that would best describe the clothes in Hera's closet is "movement". The girl could wear a paper bag and make it look good, but her outfits are all about maneuverability and comfort. She might style her attire with a bit of jewelry, but Hera never over-accessorizes.
When it comes to fashion, a few standard trendy items and separates go a long way, but Hera's shoes are really what she obsesses over. Every color, every style--picking the perfect shoes for the occasion, whether it's a trip to the store or to a party is a necessity. Overall, Hera's style can be summed up as being classy.
Face Claim: Malin Åkerman
General Appearance: Sun-kissed skin, golden curls, and a beautiful smile are usually the first things people notice about Hera. The woman is curvaceous in all the right places and as statuesque as the Greek Goddess she's named for. There is a femininity and delicateness to Hera's features that make her very approachable. She is a bit self-conscious about a small beauty mark on her left jaw and often attempts to cover it up with her natural-looking makeup.
Likes:General Character Traits: As the oldest of the Castellanos children, Hera felt a significant amount of pressure and responsibility to be a model individual for her younger siblings to look up to. It wasn't just her sense of duty to her family that motivates her to frequently go the extra mile, Hera also felt she had something to prove to herself; that genuine goodness still existed.
+ Cheese. Too much.
+ Having a big family!
+ Fresh flowers
+ How the sky lights up with color when the sun rises and sets
+ Dancing when she thinks no one is watching her make a fool of herself
+ Animal abuse
+ Being the eldest child
+ Bees!! (and pretty much just bugs in general)
+ Crying (whether it's herself or others)
Habits/Mannerisms: Hera is a ray of sunshine, always smiling and confident. Often her facial expressions betray her inner thoughts and feelings. Hera feels that with so many younger siblings, she has to be a good role model and goes out of her way to showcase that side of herself, adding to some inner conflict of who she portrays herself to be and who she feels she can't be.
+ Self-inflicted Drudgery
Hera is an optimistic person and any challenges she encounters are addressed directly. While there is an effortlessness to how Hera operates that is admirable, she is particularly dedicated to finding a sense of success since most of her life she has felt that she has been playing catch-up.
There is a nurturing quality to Hera that lends itself well to her relationships with others. Somewhat shy and not especially outgoing, Hera is still a very sweet person who is endearing, compassionate, and very willing to help others however she can. Hera is also extremely loyal to her family, especially.
Some areas Hera could improve on are related to how stressed she can become due to burning herself out with her efforts. She often puts herself into situations where she bites off more than she can chew.
The Gods blessed Jacob and Calliope Castellanos with a little girl as a testament to their love for one another. The moment she entered their lives was one that neither would ever forget--how could they? She was their firstborn child, with bright blue eyes and golden curls atop her head. She was born the last day of June--the month named in honor of the Roman Goddess Juno, whose equivalent was the Greek Goddess Hera. Thus, her parents named her Hera, in honor of the Goddess whose name marked the month of her birth, and Kalonice for their daughter's striking beauty that out-shined all others.
Hera would not be the only child Jacob and Calliope had together, only the first of many. Anything and everything that Hera did was a new experience--not just for her, but for her parents as well.
Growing up, Hera's family didn't have a lot of extra money on account of their ever-growing family, even though both parents worked good-paying jobs with the ministry and in education, respectively. It was rare that Hera would step out of line, and she proved from an early age that she was a trustworthy young lady with a nurturing personality.
With so many children in the household, uncontrolled magical accidents throughout the home became commonplace, and neither parent gave a second thought to it until the time came for Hera to receive her invitation to Beauxbatons Academy of Magic--because an invitation never arrived.
On Hera's part, she had heard so much about Beauxbatons and was excited to begin learning how to use magic like her parents. It had never occurred to her that she would have needed to showcase an affinity for magic prior to attending the school in order for her to gain admittance. Her parents had, naturally, assumed some of the instances of accidental magic in the home were caused by Hera, but the girl didn't seem equipped with any attachment to magic or magical artefacts.
It was, needless to say, a disappointment to her family, but they didn't love her any less, nor did they treat her any differently. With or without magic, she was a talented young girl with a lot of heart and potential. The individual who was most displeased was Hera herself. She marked the date on her calendar: September first. If she could prove herself magical by that date, she could attend Beauxbatons. All summer long she would invent new ways of trying to force the magic out of her--and on more than one occasion was scolded for being so headstrong about the act. Hera wasn't giving up, though, and even enlisted the help of her siblings.
For all their attempts and efforts, no sign of magic could be attributed to Hera. September first came and went, and by that point Hera had been enrolled in a private muggle school and was soon learning alongside other non-magical children.
She hated it.
It wasn't the muggles themselves--Hera didn't mind them--what she minded was feeling as though she was missing out, as though she didn't belong, and as though she had a greater purpose.
Some may argue it was fate that had eventually led Hera to her magic, though others might say it was merely a happy coincidence. Hera is more inclined to believe the former; she doesn't believe it can be coincidence that her ancestor played a role in defeating one of the few chimera-slayers in Greece, that he would have an unfragmented Chimera-scale core wand forged by Hephaestus, or that the wand would be passed down between generations of the Castellanos Clan to find a cozy spot in Hera's Grandparents' attic where she just so happened to find it.
...Okay, so maybe it was questionable whether or not the wand was actually forged by a God. But the rest?
Hera found the wand in a box of miscellaneous junk. To this day, she can't truly explain what it was about the wand that made her seek it out. She remembered a feeling. Warm, comforting, understanding... and a magnetic-like force that seemed to guide her toward the object. It had its own case, and her grandparents relayed the story of the wand's origin to Hera as though it was something they whole-heartedly believed.
The wand was gifted to Hera as a reminder she was part of a wizarding family--no one expected that it would actually bond to her. How could it? She hadn't yet displayed any magical ability.
Until she took the wand from her grandparent and gave it a playful flick, testing it out without any intention of performing a spell, but every intention of moving a box across the room--and move, the box did. Such a little, unimposing flick blasted the box across the attic sending multiple antique belongings scattering in all directions with loud crashing noises to accompany them.
Embarrassed, Hera's first initial reaction was to hide the wand behind her back. But it occurred to her that for as hard as she had tried to force the magic out of herself, it was this simple, effortless action that she hadn't really even been thinking about with conviction that led her to finally produce magic.
The relief and excitement felt from her older family members was palpable. Maybe Hera's younger siblings didn't quite understand how momentous it was that Hera was merely a late-late-bloomer and not a squib--she doubted they could comprehend the social implications. Magic changed everything. And though it was too late for her to attend school that particular year, Hera received her letter of acceptance to Beauxbatons soon after. "Excited" didn't cover the amount of joy she felt knowing she would be going to Beauxbatons.
School would not be without its challenges, though. Hera was getting a late start--or at least, that's how she viewed it. There were some students in her class year that were her age, but most were younger than her, and having to navigate the socio-political opinions of bloodstatus at a rather young age was difficult on Hera. She tried to make friends at school in that first year, but when her family moved to London prior to her second year of school, Hera was back at square one with her friendships.
Hogwarts. New school, new year, new everything. She had her family, of course, and lettered them frequently moreso for the familiarity rather than being homesick. Hera had been sorted Ravenclaw when she transferred, and the House seemed fitting given that she had delved more into her studies to avoid her loneliness.
Her younger sister Nyx soon followed her to Hogwarts a year later, though she was sorted into a different House. Hera began to feel much more comfortable with a family member around on campus, and she started branching out more in an effort to make long-lasting friendships. She even tried out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch Team, finding flying to be a favorite past-time and athletics a worthwhile use of her time considering it opened the door for her to form many new friendships.
Flying came far more easily to Hera than her wandwork, however, and she often struggled to control the magic she had wished for so badly. One of her professors even suggested Hera use a different wand for her classwork rather than her family heirloom since it was obviously too powerful for her while she was still learning.
Hera didn't want to give up on her wand, though. She felt as though that would be a betrayal since it was the wand that had awakened the magic within Hera to begin with. She endeavored to do better. Hera worked harder than anyone else and studied longer than anyone she knew until she could use her wand and her magic effectively. Her dedication was apparent from year to year as she made her way through Hogwarts, and for a witch who came into her magic later than any of her peers, Hera proved to be quite the powerful witch while at school.
Hera's goals weren't usually about herself though. Yes, she wanted to learn control for personal reasons, but expanding her knowledge and making practical use of her magic? That was done for the benefit of others. Hera didn't always know what she wanted to do with herself after Hogwarts, but she was confronted with the realization that she needed a plan while she was in her fifth year. She had already earned a couple leadership positions as Prefect and Quidditch Captain, and from those she learned she rather enjoyed setting a good example for others. Not only that, but being in a position of authority gave her the flexibility necessary to help others as well.
After earning the highest marks possible on her OWLS and NEWTS, and gaining the Head Girl position, Hera decided she wanted to direct her career ambitions toward the medical field. She had always been strongly connected to family and is a tender and compassionate person with a soft spot for babies of all kinds--it made sense that she would enter the Healer Training program for the maternity and pediatric wards at St. Mungo's upon her graduation from Hogwarts.
With her training only a few short years away from completion, Hera has high hopes for her future and is looking forward to the day she doesn't feel like she's trying to chase after a lost opportunity because of her late-blooming magic putting her a year behind where she "should" be.
