New Members Handbook
Welcome to The Next Incantation, an originals only, post potter RP! We're glad you've chosen to give us a look and we hope to welcome you into our wonderful group. Feeling confused or overwhelmed? This guide should help to answer any questions you may have, but to get you started, the most important steps are these:
Read the Rules!
I know, it can be tedious and annoying, but well worth it to see how we operate. In a nutshell, the rules say to play nice, no drama and check your spelling, like most roleplay sites, but said far more eloquently. Also, please note we are rated R18+, so if you're younger than 18, please click that little X now.
Reserve any face/job/ability!
TNI is a large and very active site. Popular faces, special character jobs and abilities all fill up very quickly. You can reserve any of these for seven days by clicking on the appropriate links. Face Claims, Jobs, Abilities, House.
You've gotten through the rules and decided this might be the place for you? Great! Please give your character a human name. I will not accept names like "Hannah Heroin" or "Crystal Meth". They show that you're not being creative or mature, just trying to be cute.
Please register the standard way, i.e John Smith, not JOHN SMITH or JohnSmith.
If you register with harrypotter123 or similar, your account will be deleted. Likewise, your character should have a First AND Last name. No single names unless you are playing a House Elf or have a very good reason for it.
|Can I be a relative of a canon character?|
In a nutshell, no. While we will allow an obscure connection such as second cousin twice removed or similar, we prefer to be an ORIGINAL characters only site. This means we highly discourage characters with the last names Potter, Weasley, Granger, Dumbledore, Riddle, Black, Snape etc.|
We appreciate your cooperation in this matter and hope you understand how easily such a thing could be abused if allowed.
|English is not my first language. Can I still join?|
|Absolutely! We have quite a few members here who have English as their second language and we try to make sure everyone is welcomed and enjoying themselves. The only way someone will be denied is if they don't read and follow the rules and deliver a realistic character for us to play with. All we ask is that your grasp of English be good enough for people to understand you, especially in your writing.|
|Can I use the same email for more than one account?|
|Unfortunately our software doesn't allow for more than one account to share the same email address so you'll need a unique one for each account. Don't worry, though! We've switched off email verification so you don't have to wait to get registered. Just make something up and it will work just fine.|
|Do you have sub-accounts here?|
No. We run on an account per character system, but don't despair! We have a very handy account switcher to make it easy for you to switch between your characters (should you make more than one) and, even more convenient, when your characters have all been linked you can choose which character to post as when you're writing your post with no need to switch between accounts!|
We do NOT allow OOC accounts here. These are reserved for staff members only to allow them to be easily found and contacted.
|Playing as a student|
|Making a student character can be a lot of fun! Not only do you get to go to Hogwarts, you get to forge friendships that can last right into your adult years. Imagine the years of roleplay ahead of you! How rewarding, too, to see your character grow and mature from nervous and shy little first year to confident and bold young adult?|
|Do I have to start as a first year?|
|Absolutely not! So long as there's room, you can choose any year group you wish. Ratio's can be found HERE and you can reserve a spot for up to 7 days.|
|Can I choose my own house?|
|As above, so long as there's room in your desired house/year group then you may reserve it for up to 7 days while you complete your application. A lot of members have found, though, that the SORTING HAT is a lot of fun and can yield surprising results and twists for your character.|
|Are transfer students allowed?|
|They are! Your student can transfer from any of the approved canon schools listed HERE, but please provide a logical explanation. Your student must be a UK resident to attend Hogwarts! We also only allow 5 students from each school to keep things realistic. Hogwarts is a UK school and the majority of her students should be born in the UK.|
|Can I be an Animagus/Legilimens/Parselmouth/etc?|
To keep things as balanced and realistic as possible, we do have a few restrictions on the amounts and types of abilities a student can have. |
You CANNOT claim the abilities of Animagus/ Legilimens/ Occlumens/ Dark Witch or Wizard with ANY character under the age of 18, regardless of your intentions for their future. This also includes characters that are still students on Hogwarts' grounds, regardless of age. While such things can be studied, it is HIGHLY unlikely that your character will be a master of them for a long time and without YEARS of study and practice.
We also have a rule that no one character can fill more than two types/abilities slots to give everyone a chance and to cut down on overpowered characters.
|Do I actually have to attend classes? How?|
No, you don't have to attend classes, but they're a lot of fun and the best way to earn points for your house. Our lessons are posted on either the 1st or 15th of each month and they give a minimum of two weeks to complete homework. Doing your lessons simply requires you to read the current lesson and PM your answers to your teacher. Lessons are not compulsory for your character to move up the years. It's more for fun and personal challenges.|
All homework is worth points that are added to your house total. Mid-year tests are worth 50 points, while our end of year exams are worth a huge 100 points each!
Classes run from September 1st to June 30th, with mid year tests in January and end of year exams in June.
|Can I start a Hogwarts club for my fellow students?|
Ultimately, no. There are a lot of canon clubs that we would prefer to be utilized and there are lots of choices! The Frog Choir, Gobstones, Wizard's Chess, Potions Club, Dueling Club, Magical Creatures Club, Wizard Card Collectors Club and Knitting Club are ALL canon, so have fun!|
We also have a very few admin approved groups such as Hogwarts GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) and a student run newspaper that you can be a part of as well.
|Can I be a Prefect?|
As you might imagine, Prefect positions are popular. Not everyone can be a Prefect, though, and to help you consider if your character would be suited to such a position, we have a few guidelines. Prefect positions are available to characters who have made over 50 posts and are active. Positions will be revoked if you are absent without explanation for longer than 14 days.|
You might also like to consider whether or not your character has leadership qualities, has the strength to withstand ridicule, has the time to attend meetings and enforce school rules and to be prepared to lose the position if they, themselves, break any school rules. This is a position to take seriously! If you think your character has what it takes, then head HERE to stake your claim.
|I want my student to explore the Forbidden Forest!|
Okay, so we've all read the books and watched the movies and our heroes seem to spend an awfully large amount of time traipsing around in places they've been told not to. Why did Harry not get into much trouble because of this? Probably because he was busy being prepared for that none can die while the other lives crap. You know, the Chosen One. That provided a certain amount of leniency for his actions that any normal student wouldn't get and I hate to break it to you but...you're a normal student.|
This doesn't mean you can't send your character into the dark and dangerous depths, but be prepared for IC consequences. Basically, if your students is going to break the rules, they're going to be punished. Not because we want to kill your fun, but because it's what any good school would do.
|You're 18+ so does that mean my student can have fun?|
There's a very fine line here that some people aren't able to grasp. Yes, we're rated 18+. Yes, this means that we allow adult situations to happen. No, this does not mean we're a smut for all porn site! It's in the rules, but I'll lay it out for you again here, just in case it was overlooked.|
We're an adult site and so, yes, sex happens. We don't want every thread you're in to be a sexual one though and if you're writing smut ONLY then you'll be given a warning. While sex is a lot of fun and a part of life, it's not what this site is about. Character development, moving a story forward, these are good reasons to write a sex scene. Because you're sexually frustrated and need an outlet is NOT. Be wary of realism. Adults can easily get away with having relations, but they still have to be careful about where. Students are far more restricted. Sex in dorms, in common rooms, classrooms, etc will most likely have your character in deep trouble. Use common sense! You can find more info HERE.
|Do you have Quidditch? Can I play?|
|Of course we have Quidditch, and you'll find we have some very avid players here as well as fans of all teams! Our games are highly anticipated and provoke much sweating of hands and heart palpitations! For more information on the game, head on over HERE. To see if any spots are available on your house team, read HERE. Even if your teams are full, though, we highly encourage spectators! We take our Quidditch very seriously.||Playing as an adult|
|The fun doesn't just happen at Hogwarts, nor does it stop as soon as your student graduates. Whether it's your first character, or your fifteenth, playing an adult opens up a whole world of opportunities, and we DO mean world. Hogwarts may be a busy, thriving place on TNI, but we are lucky enough to also be thriving in many other places! The Ministry is always buzzing with activity, as well as St Mungo's and don't forget all those shops! The wizarding world is your oyster. Get in there and explore from a whole new perspective!|
|I want to play the next Dark Lord. Can I?|
|No. We already have an established Dark Wizard group. NO others will be approved. This doesn't mean you have to play a goody two shoes! Villains come in all shapes and sizes, fashions and flavors and you don't have to be a Dark Lord (or even be associated with our site canon group, the Brotherhood) to cause a little chaos. All we ask from you is to keep it canon, keep it realistic and don't try to be the most powerful bad ass the wizarding world has ever seen. THIS info will help you. Read it!|
|How about a Professor?|
This is another one of those positions that is in high demand and in short supply. It also comes with certain standards, goals and expectations. The most important rule is that it is NOT your first character on the site, not because we don't think you could do the job but because we want to be sure that you're going to stick around. You also need to have made at least 50 posts and been with us for a minimum of two months. |
We take pride in the high level of excellence from all teachers and, therefore, are very selective on who is accepted. Please do not take offence if you are not chosen for a position. Most times, we will offer for you to re-submit your application. Remember, the more detail you can give, the better! The internet is a remarkable resource for lessons. We recommend you use it to its full advantage when planning lessons.
Preference WILL be given to adults with a long term commitment to the site. If you only want to teach for a month or two, then please do not apply for a full time position. We wish to give our students the highest level of education and, therefore, the less teacher changeover, the better. For more info, or to apply, go HERE.
|My student just graduated. What next?|
You have so many options! Obviously the most popular places for a character to work are the Ministry or St Mungo's and we have many open spots for trainees in most areas.|
We also have our Wizarding school, Myrddin Academy of Magic, where your students can move into dorms and enjoy college life!
Of course, just as in real life, not everyone has the ability to get a job straight away and may not wish to continue in a traineeship or further education. You're very welcome to have your character become unemployed, being hit by hard times, anything to have fun! You can also open your own store in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley, or gain employment in one of the already established businesses. Ultimately, it's up to you and what fits for your character.
|Is there any way to find out who my adult might have gone to school with?|
|I'm so glad you asked! One special thing about having so many dedicated members is that we get special lists composed full of handy and fun information for you. One of them is our Alumni list, showing all characters currently played on the site who are no longer at Hogwarts, sorted by year/house/school and even showing who was a prefect/head girl or boy and much more. Take a look at it right HERE.|
|How many abilities am I allowed to have?|
To keep it fair and to minimise any chance of someone playing an unbalanced and overpowered character, we have a limit of TWO abilities/types per character. This means that if your character is an Auror and a Seer, for example, they will not be allowed to become a Werewolf or become skilled at Legilimency so please be very careful and consider your characters future when choosing!|
Another way to keep things fair is our ratio limit of 1:3. This means that you may have one character WITH an ability, and must have three without before you will be permitted another.
We do understand that you can't foresee every outcome for your character and, especially when starting with a student, you don't always know where they'll end up. Situations crop up. Circumstances change. We just want to make sure the site is full of well balanced characters so everyone has a chance to shine!
|Not all info will apply to a student or an adult character, of course. Sometimes you just want to know what's what, so here you go.|
|You sure have a lot of lists!|
We do, and every single one is designed to help you and enrich your experience here with us. When you've been around as long as we have you accumulate a lot of information, you think of more and more things that could be useful. You may not need all of them, but they're all a great read.|
Our most important lists are the ones you need to reply to when you're accepted like Who's Who, Face Claims and our Masterlist, but you can also find a list of currently enrolled students, a Careers Advice guide, an Alumni list, Wands, Hogwarts rules and much, much more. Can't find something? Just ask and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.
|Why is the site played in real time. Isn't that too slow?|
In a word, QUALITY. I know how much you all want to zip through the years to see what happens to your character, but if you've ever been in an exciting thread that you didn't want to end before, you'll understand why. Time goes by so quickly but life is also busy. Sometimes a thread set on a particular day might take weeks to finish and that's great! What we don't want is for everyone to feel left behind because of it, to still be writing a thread set a year ago when too much has changed.|
Working in real time gives players time to truly delve deep into their characters life, to give it depth and detail that might get rushed over if we were trying to speed through. There's nothing more rewarding than watching your character grow and change over the years, growing with you. It makes us unique and many of us have real friendships that will last a lifetime because of it!
|Does this site use/require DoHTML?|
|Yes and no. We use HTML, but you can easily grab any dohtml template and if you remove the dohtml tags (and click 'enable html' BEFORE you paste the code. then it should work perfectly! Occasionally you may need to add ' to the beginning and end of urls for links and images but that should be it. And, of course, if you have any problems, just give us a yell and we'll be happy to help! You can see some examples of dohtml working HERE|
|No-one wants to write with me!|
First of all, rest assured that none of us are big, scary or mean. Really! We're all just here to write and have fun and we LOVE plotting. It's what makes this place so great, that no-one is excluded. But we've all been new, too, and so we know how hard it can be for some to overcome that barrier of getting that first thread, so here are some really easy things you can do. First, make a PLOT PAGE for your character. It doesn't have to be fancy. Just a few sentences about your character and what you're hoping for and then sit back and wait for suggestions from others. |
Of course, if you want to be a little more proactive you can also reply to other peoples plot pages, check for any current OPEN THREADS or, if you like a little adventure, toss your character into the ring with THREAD ROULETTE. If, after trying all these things, you're still having trouble getting a thread, feel free to join our BUDDY SYSTEM and we'll pair you up with one of our wonderful buddies who will help you get started! There's no excuse for being bored or no threads. If you make the effort to get involved, then others will make the effort to write with you! It's a two way street.
|I have a problem with a member/staff. What can I do?|
|First, we want to assure you that any complaints are dealt with confidentially and professionally. Of course the best outcome would be those involved talking it out in a mature way, since we're all adults, but we also understand that sometimes this doesn't always work out. In those cases, feel free to PM an admin and we'll do everything we can to help resolve any issues.|
|I can't find the answer to my question here!|
|If you still cannot find the answer to your question here, then please leave a message in STAFF HELP and we will try to help you!|
