Students must be courteous and respectful towards professors, students, and all members of the school community. Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner on school grounds and during all school functions. Appropriate language should be used throughout the school, especially during class time.Sanction:
Depending on the severity of the offence, House Points will be removed and detentions may follow.Rule 2.
Students are forbidden from carrying around objects with the purpose of harming others. Weapons are defined as "any article made or adapted for causing injury to the person; or intended by the person having it with him/her for such use by him/her". This includes all knives excluding foldable pocket knives (where the blade is less than 3 inches long).Sanction:
Suspension - at a minimum of one week's removal from school. Repeated offences (a maximum of 3) will result in the student being expelled.Rule 3.
Students are forbidden from using Dark Magic (all spells classified as hexes and curses on the Spell List
are Dark Magic) at all, whether practising or using them on other students. Those found even practising this type of magic will incur strict punishment and may be referred to the Ministry of Magic's Magical Law Enforcement department.Sanction:
Depending on the nature of the spell, the offender will either be suspended or expelled. Students casting curses will be referred to the Ministry of Magic.Rule 4.
Smoking and consumption of drugs is forbidden. It is an offence to bring any of the following prohibited items to the school: tobacco; chewing gum; alcohol; fireworks; pornographic images; stolen or legally prohibited or potentially harmful or damaging substance or object (see Rule 3).Sanction:
Prohibited items will be confiscated, and offender will be given detention.Rule 5.
The possession of alcohol or any illegal substances on school premises or at school events is strictly prohibited.NOTE:
While the Hogwarts Kitchens store some Butterbeer (low-alcohol drink), this is strictly for staff. Students found removing any of these drinks from the Kitchen will be banned from ever entering the Kitchens again.Sanction:
Confiscation of the offending items, and one week's suspension for all students involved.Rule 6.All students are expected to maintain their uniform to a high standard.
Students are asked to attend class well-groomed and to ensure that their general appearance and hairstyles are suitable to the wearing of school uniform. Make-up should not be excessive, using only natural colours and styles.Sanction:
Removal of House Points (5 for minor issues, 10 points maximum). Persistent offenders will be issued detention.Rule 7.
Students are forbidden from engaging in sexual activity anywhere on the Hogwarts Grounds. This includes in bathrooms and dormitories, and also applies to students above the age of 16.Sanction:
Students above the age of 16 caught engaging in sexual activity will be punished accordingly, based on the circumstances, and repeat offenders will be suspended.
Students above the age of 16 engaging in sexual activity with a minor will be suspended, and repeat offenders will be expelled.
Students under the age of 16 engaging in sexual activity will be punished accordingly based on the circumstances, and repeat offenders will be suspended.
Students of any age engaging in sexual activity with members of staff will be punished accordingly based on the circumstances. Members of staff involved in sexual relations with students will be removed from the school with immediate effect.Rule 8.
Students are not permitted to leave school premises except in extenuating circumstances. For this, their parent/guardian should write to the Head of House or Headmistress (except in the case of being taken to St. Mungo's at request of the School Matron). They must be collected from the Headmistress' office by a parent/guardian/suitable adult, or make other suitable arrangements with the board of government.Sanction:
Students found forging such notes will be given detention and lose privileges (including Hogsmeade privileges).Rule 9.
Students must be present and on time for all classes. Absences must be covered by a letter from the School Matron in the case of sickness.Sanction:
Students late to class three times without reason will be issued detention.Rule 10.
Students must work conscientiously and carefully perform the homework assigned to the best of their ability, and turn in work when requested.Sanction:
First offence - 5 points removed from House, and homework to be presented the next day.
Second offence - punishment exercise (an essay).
Third offence - Detention given.Rule 11.
Students must come prepared with all books, ingredients, materials, equipment, etc. required for all
First offence - 5 points removed.
Second offence - 10 points removed and detention.
Third offence - referred to Head of House.Rule 12.
Outside school times, it is expected that pupils will continue to conduct themselves in a dignified manner, thus fostering the good name of the school. This includes, but is not limited to: sexual misconduct, criminal activity, impolite behavior.Sanction:
Any misconduct that brings the school into disrepute will be dealt with severely, through detention or suspension, depending on the circumstances.Rule 13.
Students are allowed one pet. Accepted pet types are: cats, ferrets, non-venomous snakes, mice, owls, Pygmy Puffs, rats, small lizards, and toads. All pets must be trained and spayed/neutered before arriving at school.Sanction
: Removal of pet from school grounds.Rule 14.
The use of magic must be performed with good judgement and caution. Disruptive or combative magic is forbidden anywhere on school grounds.Sanction:
Students using disruptive magic will be given detention or a task relevant to the magic used.
Students using combative magic without supervision will be given two evening detentions.Rule 15.
Students are not allowed to enter the Forbidden Forest except in the company and close supervision of a member of staff.Sanction
Entering the Forbidden Forest incurs one detention.
Students found more than ten metres into the Forbidden Forest will be given a week's worth of evening detentions.Rule 16.
Students from their third year are permitted to leave the grounds to visit Hogsmeade on notified weekends only
when they have a permission slip signed by their parents/guardians.Sanction:
Students attempting to enter Hogsmeade without signed permission slips will be given weekend detention.
Students attempting to leave the school grounds outside of Hogsmeade weekends without permission will be given a week's worth of evening detentions.Rule 17.
Curfew for students from First to Fourth Years begins at 7PM, and ends at 7am - all students in these years must be within their common rooms during these hours. Older students from Fifth to Seventh Years must be within their common rooms at precisely 9PM, with their curfew also ending at 7am. Students are exempt from this rule when attending Astronomy class or elseSanction:
All students found outside of their common rooms without permission will be given detention and lose House Points.Rule 18.
Certain areas within the school grounds are out of bounds unless being used by a member of staff - the entrances have been charmed against any Unlocking Charms. These include: the Boathouse, the Greenhouses, and all (used) classrooms. Students must ask permission from the appropriate member of staff to access these areas in their free time. Both the Boathouse and Greenhouses may only be used with a member of staff present.Sanction:
Students found attempting to break into a supervised-only area will be given detention.Rule 19.
While swimming in the Black Lake is permitted, students should be aware of the dangers of the lake's occupants. Students are not allowed to swim twenty feet out into the lake without supervision or permission from their Head of House. All swimmers must be in appropriate swimming gear.Sanction:
Students attempting to swim past the marked distance will be given detention and lose privileges.
Those found swimming nude will be given detention.Rule 20.
Students must respect the property of other students and the school property at all times. All students are expected to keep their classrooms, school grounds, and living quarters tidy. For this reason, students are not permitted to eat during class, and may only drink water from bottles during class. Students must take responsibility for the safekeeping of their own property including books and all other valuables.Sanction:
Students found littering will be on clean-up duty during a detention hour.
Stealing or damaging property that is not theirs will result in replacing that property and two evening detentions.
