SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT
The Code of Conduct exists:
- To create a caring and effective learning environment
- To foster responsible behaviour which enhances self-reliance, dignity, self-discipline and a sense of self-worth.
- To foster mutual respect between all members of the school community.
- To protect the rights of pupils to learn and professors to teach.
Serious and/or persistent misbehaviour:
Students who seriously and/or persistently misbehave will be referred to the board of management. The school considers suspension to be a serious sanction and any student who has been suspended three times will be referred to the board of management. The expulsion of a student, which is the ultimate sanction, is the prerogative of the board of management. The board of management consists of the Headmistress and the Heads of Houses.
Essentials of school uniform:
- Solid grey knee length skirt or official school trousers
- V-neck jumper with House crest
- White shirt with collar
- Tie with House colors/insignia properly tied
- Solid grey or black, matching socks
- Black robes, fastened neatly and completely
- A pair of flat black shoes; no platforms, high heels or boots allowed.
- One black, pointed hat
In the interest of fairness to all students, the following procedure applies:
- Parents/guardians will always be notified when a student has received detention
- Student must attend detention on the date specified
- If a student fails to turn up, she will receive an evening detention
- If a student fails to turn up for evening detention, she will be suspended.
NOTE: if a student is absent on the day of her detention, it is her responsibility to meet with the assigning professor on returning to school, with a signed note from her parents/guardians or the school nurse explaining her absence. In this case, her detention will be transferred to another date.
Rule 1. Students must be courteous and respectful towards professors, students, and all members of the school community. Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner on school grounds and during all school functions.
Sanction: Disrespectful/abusive behaviour or language will incur punishment based on the severity of the offence. Persistent offenders will be referred to the board of management.
Rule 2. Students must be present and on time for all classes morning and afternoon and attend school regularly. A letter of explanation from a parent or guardian to all class professors is required on returning from absence.
Sanction: Detention for failure to comply.
-Students arriving to class late must sign the register at the school office.
Sanction: Late three times - Detention.
-If a student needs to leave during school hours, they must get permission from her Head of House or the Headmistress, they must have a note of explanation from a parent or guardian (except in cases of sickness in which case they will be referred to the Hospital Wing), they must sign out at general office and she must be collected by a parent or guardian at the general office, or make other suitable arrangements with the management.
Sanction: Pupils who absent themselves from class without permission, the following will apply:
- First offence: parents are called for a meeting with professor or Head of House
- Second and further offences: suspension
Rule 3. Each student must work conscientiously and carefully perform the homework assigned to the best of their ability.
Sanction: First offence - warning given and homework to be presented the next day.
Second offence - punishment exercise
Third offence - Detention given and recorded in Discipline book
Rule 4. Students must come prepared with all books, ingredients, materials, equipment etc required for all classes.
Sanction: First offence - warning given
Second offence - punishment exercise
Third offence - Detention given
Further offences - report to management
Rule 5. The correct wearing of school uniform during school hours is a strict requirement. Students must maintain their uniform to a high standard. Students are asked to attend class well-groomed and to ensure that their general appearance and hairstyles are suitable to the wearing of school uniform.
Sanction: Students who do not wear the correct school uniform will not be permitted to attend class.
Rule 6. Students must keep their class and school ground tidy.
Sanction: Students found littering will incur clean up duty/detention
Rule 7. By law, smoking is prohibited on school premises and on school outings. Students are prohibited from smoking anywhere in their school uniforms.
Sanction: Students smoking while in uniform or in/around school premises and on school outings will be suspended. Persistent offenders of this regulation will be referred to the board of management.
Rule 8. Chewing gum is not allowed.
Sanction: Clean up Duty
Rule 9. Outside school times, it is expected that pupils will continue to conduct themselves in a dignified manner, thus fostering the good name of the school. This includes, but is not limited to: sexual misconduct, criminal activity, impolite behavior.
Sanction: Any misconduct that brings the school into disrepute will be dealt with severely.
Rule 10. The possession of alcohol or any illegal substances on school premises or at school events is strictly prohibited.
Sanction: Students will be suspended and will be referred to the board of management.
Rule 11. Students must respect school property at all times.
Sanction: Any damage to school property will be dealt with severely.
Rule 12. Students must respect the property of other students.
Sanction: Stealing is considered to be a very serious offence and will incur a serious sanction.
Students must take responsibility for the safekeeping of their own property including books and all other valuables.
Rule 13. Magic use must be performed with good judgement and caution. Disruptive magic will receive punishment.
Sanction: Detention or a task relevant to the magic used.
Rule 14. Students are allowed one pet. Accepted pet types are: owls, cats, toads, nonvenomous snakes, ferrets, rats/mice, and Pygmy Puffs.
Sanction: Detention and/or removal of pet from school grounds for an appropriate amount of time, up to and including banning the student from having a pet on school grounds.
Rule 15. Students are not allowed into the Forbidden Forest.
